Restoring Hole-in-the-Rock: A Spring Replanting Update
This spring was a big one for Papago Park. Between March and Earth Day, our volunteers rolled up their sleeves and helped bring new life back to the area around Hole-in-the-Rock. With the steady stream of foot traffic this landmark gets, the surrounding desert has taken a real beating over the years. Thanks to the support of our community and partners, we were able to make meaningful progress.
Over the course of several workdays, our crews planted more than 100 native species and cactus throughout the impacted areas. These weren’t just decorative additions. Each plant plays a role in stabilizing the soil, restoring habitat, and helping this landscape return to the state it deserves. We also relined the nearby trails to guide visitors toward the correct pathways and discourage the spider trails that cut across sensitive terrain.
These efforts were made possible through generous funding and collaboration. MBAA stepped up with a project donation, helping us secure the plants and materials we needed. Gen Digital joined us as a sponsor for our Earth Day event, bringing extra hands, energy, and momentum exactly when we needed it most.
We also worked closely with the Phoenix Park Rangers and the City of Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department. Their knowledge of the land and commitment to long-term stewardship helped us make sure every plant went where it had the best chance to thrive.
Thank you to every volunteer who came out, every partner who supported this project, and everyone who continues to care for Papago in their daily choices and routines. Together, we are protecting a place that belongs to all of us. The desert remembers this kind of work, and so do we.
More restoration updates coming soon.
