Revitalizing Papago Park: A Community Effort 🌵
Last Sunday, something remarkable happened at Papago Park. It was a day where the collaborative spirit of our community shone brightly, illustrating what we can achieve together. The Clean Up Papago team of volunteers, in partnership with the City of Phoenix, embarked on a mission to bring new life to the area surrounding Hunt's Tomb, an iconic feature of the park.
A Partnership Born from Vision
Our journey began in December last year when representatives from Clean Up Papago met with Josh Parnell and Jarod Rogers from the City of Phoenix Parks Department. Together, we identified key areas in Papago Park that were ripe for rejuvenation, researched and sourced native plant species.
Giving Plants a Second Life
In a twist that aligns perfectly with our ethos of conservation, most of the plants used in this project were salvaged from construction sites. Thanks to our “cactus lady,” who has an incredible knack for saving these resilient desert plants, we were able to give these plants a second chance at life. The brittle bush was kindly donated by Moon Valley Nurseries. From majestic saguaros to delicate prickly pears, cholla, and brittle bush, each plant now has a new home where it can thrive and contribute to the local ecosystem.
A Community Effort
This project wasn't just about planting. It was a demonstration of community spirit. The City of Phoenix provided the necessary tools, while Clean Up Papago ensured our volunteers were well taken care of, with snacks to keep the energy high. The enthusiasm and dedication of each volunteer were palpable, as we worked together to beautify the surroundings of the iconic Hunt’s Tomb.
Combatting Spider Trails
An interesting aspect of this project was its contribution to combating spider trails. By strategically planting these native species, we not only enhanced the park’s beauty but also played a role in preserving the integrity of the landscape, helping prevent the formation of erosive spider trails.
Looking Ahead
As these plants grow and mature, they will not only create a more beautiful space but also serve as a testament to what can be achieved when a community comes together for a common cause. This is just the beginning. Together, let's continue to nurture and beautify our shared spaces.
