Geology
The red sandstone geological formations of Papago Park and Preserve were formed 6 to 15 million years ago. The Hole in the Rock is a popular landmark and showcases the eroded formations of the sandstone.

Land Preservation
Papago became a designated reservation and was inaugurated as Saguaro National Monument in 1914. Its status was recalled by Congress in April 7th, 1930.
Papago Park was voted to become a Preserve by Tempe residents in 2018.

Activities
Papago Park spans more than 500 acres of open desert. It is divided between Tempe and Phoenix and features multiple easy to moderate hiking and biking trails.
